Introduction

Birds of War launches with seven playable birds across three flocks, each tuned around a unique role and signature ability. The roster spans every archetype a 3v3v3 aerial shooter needs — from the Shoebill's unbreakable Guardian Wings to the Eagle's high-impact Talon Dive to the Hummingbird's jet-fast Dash Burst. Picking the right bird for your team comp, your map, and your personal aim skill is the single biggest lever you have on match outcome. New players should start with the easy-difficulty birds (Shoebill and Pigeon) to learn egg-carry and proximity voice, then graduate to the harder Hummingbird and Eagle once aerial movement and ragdoll knockback feel natural. This tier list is current as of patch 1.1.5 (the Seagull nerf and Eagle Talon Dive buff), and the wiki will update it after every future balance patch.

Bird Roster

S

Shoebill

anchor

Top-tier S anchor bird with the highest survivability in the 7-bird launch roster. Guardian Wings ability blocks one incoming attack and refunds a chunk of cooldown, making Shoebill the perfect pick for solo queue anchor and Tank Front comp tank slot in ranked play. This entry sets the foundation for the rest of the category and is a good starting point for understanding the meta.

S

Eagle

diver

High-skill S-tier diver with Talon Dive that one-shots squishy birds on a clean hit post-1.1.5 damage buff. Eagle owns the airspace on Highrise and Coliseum maps and is the signature Sky Control comp pick for climbing ranked from Silver to Platinum and Master tiers. This build excels in the current 1.1.5 patch and rewards players who invest the time to learn its mechanics.

A

Crow

saboteur

A-tier Saboteur with Shadow Dive ability that lets you third-party enemy egg-carriers and slip back into fog of war before counter-pressure arrives. Crow excels in foliage-heavy Vietnam and Forest maps where stealth and vertical flanking matter most for Sneak Raid comp plays. This option fits a niche playstyle and rewards players who master the timing windows specific to this configuration.

Pigeon

support

A-tier Support and UAV with Wing Clap that pings nearby enemies and provides knock-back. Pigeon fits every meta comp as the third slot and is the easiest bird to learn — recommended as your second bird after Shoebill for new players learning proximity voice coordination. This role fills a specific gap in team compositions and is a strong counter-pick in the right matchup situations.

Seagull

disruptor

A-tier Disruptor with Chip Frenzy that, post-1.1.5 nerf, still creates chaos through double-tap knockback and area disruption. Seagull is the signature Chaos Rush comp pick and breaks nest defenses on Forest and Coliseum maps consistently despite the damage reduction. This approach requires patience but delivers strong results for players willing to invest the time to learn it.

Hummingbird

speed

B-tier Speed Demon with Dash Burst that is the fastest bird in the air but has the highest skill ceiling in the game. Hummingbird wins air duels in the right hands but melts to Eagle Talon Dive and Seagull knockback on aggressive plays without proper positioning. This setup is a recent addition to the meta and reflects the post-1.1.5 balance changes for the new ranked season.

Owl

ambusher

B-tier Ambusher with Silent Strike that rewards patience on the large Arctic and Vietnam maps. Owl picks off returning egg-carriers with high burst damage but falls behind on tight Coliseum rotations where its long flanks cannot reach in time to score the egg. This tier represents the typical playstyle and is a reliable fallback for ranked climbing when other picks don't fit.

Core Mechanics

Every bird in Birds of War shares the same baseline flight model — wing flapping for altitude, momentum-based turning, and ragdoll knockback on every hit. What changes between birds is the signature ability, the role archetype, and the cooldown timing. Talon Dive, Wing Clap, and Guardian Wings are short-cooldown utility moves that turn fights; Chip Frenzy and Dash Burst are longer-cooldown power spikes that define windows. Aerial ragdoll physics means every body-check, charge, and ability knockback can launch enemies for juggling, which is why Hummingbird combos feel so rewarding once you master the air control. The bird you pick is the bird you'll spend the most time on, and switching is only possible between matches — so commit to learning at least two roles.

Advantages

The seven-bird roster is intentionally small enough to learn deeply but varied enough that no single comp is unbeatable. Each bird has a clearly defined role — tank, support, diver, speed, ambusher, saboteur, disruptor — so you always know what your team needs and which birds counter which. Signature abilities are visually distinct and audio-cued, making them readable in proximity voice chat (you'll hear enemy Talon Dive wind-ups, which is half the counterplay). The role tags map cleanly to team comps: Sky Control (Eagle + Pigeon + Hummingbird), Sneak Raid (Crow + Owl + Pigeon), Tank Front (Shoebill + Eagle + Pigeon), and Chaos Rush (Seagull + Hummingbird + Crow). Patch 1.1.5 brought the Seagull back in line with the rest of the roster, so no single bird currently dominates 1.1.5 ranked play.

Challenges

Seven birds means seven matchups to learn, and some are noticeably harder than others — Hummingbird and Eagle both demand precise aerial control that takes dozens of hours to internalize. Birds are locked in for the entire match with no mid-game swap, so if you pick wrong you'll feel it for the full 3v3v3 timer. Counter-meta shifts with every patch, and the Seagull's Chip Frenzy was dominant in 1.1.0, nerfed hard in 1.1.5, and may be re-buffed in 1.1.6 — if you main a single bird you'll feel every balance wave. Two more birds are slated for the 9-bird target (HexNest confirmed "more on the way"), so your main may receive new direct counters at any update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bird is best for beginners in 1.1.5?+
Shoebill and Pigeon are both Easy difficulty and ideal for first-time players. Shoebill is a Tank with Guardian Wings that blocks one attack and refunds cooldown, perfect for learning the egg-pickup and nest-defense core loop. Pigeon is a Support with Wing Clap that pings nearby enemies and provides knock-back, ideal for learning proximity voice coordination. Start with one of these two and graduate to Medium-difficulty birds (Crow, Seagull, Owl) once you have 10+ hours of flight time.
Why is Eagle considered S-tier post-1.1.5?+
Eagle received a Talon Dive damage buff in 1.1.5 that restored the one-shot potential on a clean hit. Before 1.1.0, Talon Dive had a damage bug that made it underwhelming; 1.1.0 fixed the bug but the values were still low; 1.1.5 finally buffed the damage to its intended level. Combined with the 1.0.5 Highrise shrink, Eagle now owns the airspace on the smallest and fastest map. Talon Dive is a short-cooldown utility that turns fights, and on Highrise the dives come so fast that counter-play is limited.
Will the 9-bird roster drop the 7 launch birds?+
No, the two upcoming birds will be additive, not replacements. HexNest confirmed in the 1.1.0 patch notes and on Discord that the 9-bird target is the final roster size for the launch year, with 7 birds at launch and 2 more added by year-end. The two new birds will introduce new roles (likely a dedicated healer and a dedicated flanker based on community speculation) and will be free for all players. Patch 1.1.6 or 1.2.0 is the rumored release window.
Should I main Hummingbird or skip it entirely?+
Hummingbird is the highest-skill-ceiling bird in the game and B-tier in 1.1.5. If you have the time to learn it (50+ hours of dedicated Hummingbird play), it can carry games in the right hands. If you are time-constrained, stick with Shoebill, Pigeon, or Eagle for higher ranked win-rate. Hummingbird is fragile, vulnerable to Seagull knockback, and out-ranged by Eagle Talon Dive on Highrise. The reward is the fastest air-to-air dueling in the game.

Quick Tips

💡

Start with Shoebill or Pigeon as your first bird — both are Easy difficulty and teach the core egg-pickup rhythm, nest-defense priorities, and proximity voice callouts without demanding precise aerial control. These two birds have forgiving cooldowns and high survivability that let new players focus on learning the 3v3v3 format rather than mechanics.

💡

Don't one-trick a single bird in solo queue — the Birds of War meta shifts with every patch (Seagull went from must-ban in 1.1.0 to solid A-tier after the 1.1.5 nerf), and you'll need at least one tank and one diver in your rotation. Aim for a 4-5 bird pool by Gold rank to maintain comp flexibility and counter the enemy comp picks.

💡

Use proximity voice strategically — call out incoming Talon Dive wind-ups (the audio cue is loud enough for enemies to hear too), coordinate nest switches with your Pigeon teammate, and never leak egg-spawn timers to the other two flocks via idle banter. Strategic comms win games; idle chatter leaks your dive setup.
